ABOUT THE WATCH FUNCTIONS

What is a mechanical watch?

It is a watch that is powered by energy generated from the mainspring in the movement. It is also called an “analog” watch with various mechanical parts assembled meticulously inside the watch case for it to function.

Power is generated by manually winding the movement through the crown or through kinetic movement when wearing the watch.

What is the difference between a Automatic and a hand–winding(manual- winding) watch?

Self-winding(automatic) is a mechanical watch where the natural motion of the wearer provides energy to wind the mainspring. On the other hand, the manual watch requires a manual winding of the watch crown to work.

What is deviation in watches?

It depends on various factors such as temperature changes. Typically, mechanical watches can be accurate to within +/-15 second per day. The standard deviation for standard quartz movements will be +/- 15 seconds per month.

There might be an error given that every wearer will use it in a different way.

We recommend that you check the average value for at least one week rather than one day.

How water-resistant is a watch?

Typically, watch resistance rating of 30m-50m can withstand splashes and shower.

However, it’s not suitable for watersports, poolside diving or sea diving. You can also check your watch if it has stamped a mark ‘’water resistant’’ on the back.

How accurate are vintage watches?

Our vintage watches undergo meticulous checks. Generally, we regulate them until they are within +/-30 seconds per day. However, there might be some vintage watches that are keeping time within a minute or more.

For watches from the 1960’s or earlier, it’s considered to be an acceptable range if the daily variance is within ±2 minutes.

Are vintage watches still waterproof?

As for vintage watches stamped with water resistance on the back, they are suitable for daily use but may not be ideal for rainy days.
While vintage watches may not be as accurate as brand new ones, they are highly valued for their scarcity, uniqueness, and characteristics above all else.

How long can vintage watches last?

Regular maintenance is key to ensuring a longer lifespan for vintage watches. When properly cared for, a mechanical watch can last for generations.

What is a hack function?

Technically, hacking refers to a feature where when you pull out the crown to set the hour hand, the second hand of the watch will stop moving.

What is a quartz watch?

Unlike mechanical watches, quartz watches require a battery to pass an electrical charge to the quartz crystal in order to function.

What is Overhaul ( OH )?

Technically, as with any precision instrument, routine service, referred to as an overhaul, is required. An overhaul involves dismantling the watch, cleaning its parts, oiling its gears, and reassembling the movement. It is recommended that watches undergo an overhaul every 5 years for new ones and every 3 years for used ones.

What if I don’t overhaul my watch?

It could potentially cause water leakage and directly affect the movement's function, leading to further problems. Therefore, we recommend that users have their watches serviced regularly.

How much does an overhaul cost and how long would it take?

It depends on the brand and model of the watch. For instance, a watch with 3 hands would typically take approximately 1 month and a half for an overhaul, costing around 30,000 JPY. On the other hand, chronograph watches may take 1-2 months for an overhaul, with a cost ranging between 40,000-50,000 JPY.

There will be additional charges for parts replacement. Additionally, models with complex specifications will take longer and cost more.

Do you also offer free overhaul services like other stores?

Unfortunately, we do not offer overhaul services at our store. However, if your watch has stopped moving due to mechanical failure or any other cause that is not a result of mishandling by the wearer, you can send it to us for free repair, provided it is still within the warranty period. If it becomes evident during the repair process that your watch requires an overhaul, we will perform it for free. Otherwise, a service fee may be charged.

Can an vintage watch be repaired?

Yes, it is possible in some cases. However, if certain parts need to be replaced and authentic parts from the manufacturer cannot be found, we will inform you about finding suitable alternative options. This may include replacing parts with second-hand spare parts or creating our own spare parts. Please note that we are unable to repair vintage watches purchased from other stores.

Can parallel-imported goods still be sent for repair to the manufacturer?

Certain brands like Frank Muller, Pierre Kunz, etc., do not offer repair services. However, please be assured that for products purchased from our store, we are delighted to assist you in cooperation with the affiliated technicians and manufacturers we work with.

If the warranty is lost or has expired, is it still possible to send the watch to the manufacturer for repair?

Yes, it is possible to send your watch to the manufacturers for repair, but service fees and shipping charges will apply. However, some watch brands, namely Frank Muller and Pierre Kunz, do not offer repair services, regardless of whether your watch is still under warranty or not.

Yes, we offer international shipping. You can choose between two options:
1.Pick up from our Hong Kong office.
2.Direct shipping to your desired location.

Can I use a credit card for payment? Will there be any extra charge?

Credit card is available with no extra charge only for customers who purchase at store. We accept a wide range of payment options. Please note that credit card payment is not available for customers living overseas for online purchases.

We don’t take any extra charges as for payment by credit card. We accept the following credit cards and QR code payments. AMERICAN EXPRESS, Diners Club, VISA, NICOS, master card, JCB, UC, Orico, DC, MILLION CARD, GC, JACCS, Life card, SAISON CARD, wechat pay, ALIPAY, Union Pay.

Does JACKROAD only have one outlet?

Yes, we only have one physical store alongside our BETTYROAD shop in Nakano.

If I ask a friend to purchase/ pick up a watch for me, are there any documents that I would need to show you?

Please let us know in advance, your friend’s full name, contact number and his passport number. In the case of applying a tax refund, we will need you friend to show us his passport which has a tourists’ visa.

Tips for screw-down crowns.

To tighten a screw-down crown, wind it slowly while pushing it straight into the case. If it feel hard to screw it in, such as the feeling of it getting stuck halfway, please do not force it in, instead we recommend to loosen it once and then wind it in again. If the crown is screwed in forcibly, it may cause defects such as a bent or crushed screw thread and may cause impairments to waterproofing specifications.
